Pandemic Preparedness

As the second H1N1 pandemic wave tapers off, we’re all breathing a collective sigh of relief. Folks have returned to work. Companies are shipping orders on time again. Vaccination clinics have all but disappeared. It was milder than we expected, and for those of us who had one, it was a good chance to test our pandemic response plans. But because of its moderation, this particular pandemic raises more questions than it answers: as we prepared our plans and mounted our responses, were we right or just lucky?

Now is not the time for complacency.

Lessons learned on the pandemic and new insights into business operations should be crystallized and recorded in a pandemic debriefing session. Your pandemic plan would likely benefit from a formal review. An expert-reviewed online pandemic course would solidify your employees’ new understanding of influenza and how to protect themselves and their co-workers. Those who established an antiviral program should understand that their investment can be of a continued benefit with a sustainability strategy. We must take full advantage of every opportunity this pandemic has offered us. With H1N1 in retreat, we can now better prepare our employees and organizations for the next pandemic.
